For three decades Foos ran a motel in Colorado, which he bought and renovated specifically to cater to his voyeuristic needs. Foos almost gave himself away several times. Talese means to implicate us, the readers, in this chain of voyeurism. And yet the methods by which the documentarians excuse it are hallmarks of a media genre that is very much of-the-zeitgeist: true crime. The film does an excellent job of giving these women a platform for expressing how these two men have turned their lives completely inside-out. But even if we were to allow this grossly utilitarian justification, what have we learned? Anita, Fooss quiet and strange wife (who should be played by Kate McKinnon if the scrapped Voyeur movie ever gets made), says she misses the motel, and even cries when the documentary crew visits its demolished plot. He produces immaculately kept journals of his time spying on his motel guests, but some quick fact-checking proves that at least some of his dates are wrong. And if we read it as I did, and wish I hadn't he succeeds: We are guilty, too. Is that worth the violation? Are they still alive? Although Talese was unaware of the gap in Foos ownership until told of them last month, he has essentially dismissed concerns about this while promoting the book this month. The couple eventually married after Foos divorced his first wife, who died in 1984. Its good to know that Talese is finally feeling responsible for something, but the problem is that Foos behavior was able to continue undisturbed for so long, not that it is now finally public. Several other similarities between Foos and Talese are highlighted throughout the film, from their hoarding tendencies, to their record-keeping, to their self-aggrandizing decor, and their pride in being voyeurs, with Foos in the literal sense and Talese as a journalist. Any sexual activity would be timed and, combined with their other behaviour, appraised by Foos, who would write his conclusions about the state of their relationship. Once, he saw a guests dog foul a rooms carpet and furious when they didnt own up when they checked out he frogmarched them back to the room and pointed to the stain. If you thought Tiger King was too optimistic and cheerful, Tickled will surely disavow you of your remaining faith in humanity.
